travel europe germany schleswig holstein lubeck

Guide books remind us that Lubeck was made a free imperial city in 1226, and held this position for 711 years, until 1937.
Lubeck was the capital of the Hanseatic League, the association of merchants that controlled trade along the Baltic as far as Russia from the 13th century on,
and retains the name Hansestadt Lubeck even though the league's economic and politic importance dissolved in the 17th century.

In 1994, I was one of three adults who chaperoned four high school students, including my son Wyatt, on a five week exchange program with the
Liebnitz Gymnasium in Bad Schwartau outside of Lubeck. Each of the students and chaperones lived with a different family.
I stayed with the family of Nadine Stolle in Sereetz, the young lady our family had hosted in Oregon the year before.
The German people, and especially the Stolle family, are perfect hosts.
Every time I return to Germany, I will try to visit this beautiful Hanseatic city and, hopefully, see some old friends.
